Challenges to Public Education Financing Facing Missouri and the Nation November 4
 

The Weidenbaum Center cohosted a forum with the Federal Reserve of St. Louis entitled "Challenges to Public Education Financing Facing Missouri and the Nation." This non-technical, full-day symposium included sessions on public education funding formulas and the relationship between funding and student achievement. There was considerable discussion of these issues as they relate to Missouri and of the current public education financing debate occurring in the state. Participants included nationally recognized scholars in the areas of school finance and accountability as well as several public school superintendents and Missouri state legislators. This St. Louis Series Forum was a debate of the candidates for the Third Congressional District, the seat being vacated by Dick Gephardt. Democratic candidate Russ Carnahan, Republican candidate Bill Federer, and Libertarian candidate Kevin Babcock faced off, answering questions on domestic and foreign policy.

The goal of this full-day public forum was to analyze one of America's most powerful and influential industries - the motion picture industry. Cosponsored with Washington University's Department of Economics and Program in Film and Media Studies, the Weidenbaum Center Forum addressed the major issues raised by changes in the economic environment of movie making and brought these issues to the attention of a larger audience through major conference involving industry insiders, economists, and others.

Finding Common Ground in Trade Policy

A Weidenbaum Center Forum program was held in Washington, DC. The overall goal of the conference was to encourage nonpartisan thinking about important trade issues. The first panel addressed U.S. concerns about overseas working conditions while the second focused on sharing the gains of globalization worldwide.

A St. Louis Series forum on Home Rule for the City of St. Louis, an issue that was decided in the election on November 5. The two-panel program gave the political and legal history of the city and provided a opportunity for a pro and con debate on the subject.

 
 
 

State-Space Models, Regime Switching, and Identification

The Weidenbaum Center and the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis co-sponsored a workshop for leading researchers in applied time series analysis, with James Hamilton as the invited lecturer. Topics of presentations included recent changes in monetary policy implementation, the interaction between monetary policy and financial markets, and the dynamics of business cycle recoveries. Executive Regulatory Review: Surveying the Record, Making It Work

A Weidenbaum Center Forum program on the process of regulatory review in the White House and Office of Management and Budget was held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.. The program featured current and former White House and OMB officials and prominent scholars. The keynote speech was given by Dr. John Graham, Administrator, Office of Information and Regulatory Review, OMB. C-SPAN covered this speech.
