Joseph Neff, investigative reporter at The News & Observer, received the Weidenbaum Center Award for Evidence-Based Journalism at the 2013 Media Retreat. The Award recognizes a past participant(s) whose work represents quality journalism on economics, business, and government and reflects the sophisticated use of research, numbers, and statistics.
His award submission was part of a 5-part tenacious joint project investigating how North Carolina’s major nonprofit hospitals generate large profits and contribute to the high cost of health care. The articles revealed how non-profit hospital systems have gained monopolistic powers; and by consolidating into large systems, gained negotiation leverage for higher insurance payments.
