Hoover Fellow and Presidential Campaign Advisor: A Conversation with Lanhee J. Chen

Speaker: Lanhee J. Chen, David and Diane Steffy Fellow in American Public Policy Studies at the Hoover Institution, Director of Domestic Policy Studies in the Public Policy Program, and an Affiliate of the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University.

The Weidenbaum Center is honored to host Dr. Lanhee J. Chen, David and Diane Steffy Fellow in American Public Policy Studies at the Hoover Institution, Director of Domestic Policy Studies in the Public Policy Program, and an Affiliate of the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. Chen was the Republican nominee for California State Controller in 2022 and garnered more votes than any other Republican candidate in the country during that election cycle. 

A veteran of several high-profile political campaigns, Chen has worked in politics, government, academia, and the private sector. To note: this question & answer forum between Weidenbaum Center Director Andrew Reeves and Professor Lanhee J. Chen will cover a wide-range of topics, including: the state of partisan politics in the US, the current GOP climate, the 2024 presidential election, running for statewide office in California, and other public policy issues. Please see information below on how to submit questions ahead of time for Professor Chen. 

Chen has advised numerous major campaigns, including four presidential efforts. In 2012, he was policy director of the Romney-Ryan campaign, and served as Governor Mitt Romney’s chief policy adviser, a senior strategist on the campaign, and the person responsible for developing the campaign’s domestic and foreign policy. Chen also advised Senator Marco Rubio's 2016 presidential bid, served as Domestic Policy Director of Romney's 2008 campaign, and was a health policy adviser to the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign in 2004. During the 2014 and 2018 campaign cycles, Chen served as a Senior Adviser on Policy to the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).

In addition to his academic appointments, Chen is a Partner at the Brunswick Group, a global business advisory firm, and Chair of the Board of Directors at El Camino Health in Northern California. He earned his PhD and AM in Political Science from Harvard University; a JD cum laude from Harvard Law School; and his AB magna cum laude in Government from Harvard College.
