The Weidenbaum Center & the Department of Political Science hosted a special event to honor Steven S. Smith's retirement and years of service to Washington University. Thirty guests flew in from around the country, including Steve's family, Chancellor Emeritus Mark Wrighton, faculty colleagues of Steve's at other institutions, and former students that Steve advised and mentored. The event included a one-day conference where Steve's colleagues and mentors presented their research in his honor. In a statement, Chancellor Andrew Martin said "I think back to the Center for the Study of American Business, and its transformation to the Weidenbaum Center, which thrived under your leadership. As one of your generation's leading scholars of legislative politics, you've mentored and trained many students, at Minnesota and here at WashU, who have or will become the leaders of their generations of scholars. That's another important part of your legacy that you should be proud of."
The Weidenbaum Center has allowed me to grow as a researcher in a challenging but supportive environment. I appreciate the advising of Director Andrew Reeves, and I want to acknowledge all of the new people I have met and new ideas I have been introduced to along the way. The interdisciplinary workshops and policy lunches are incredible opportunities to share my work with new audiences as well as to learn from others in the social sciences. Everyone - from post-docs and faculty, to staff and Eliot Society members - are so kind, talented, and generous.
